Cricut Engraved Leather Pouch

This engraved leather pouch is perfect for holding your earbuds or other small items. Personalized, they make fantastic gifts. This is a Cricut Maker project, but we’ll give you tips for adapting it for use with the Cricut Explore as well.

Step-by-step Instructions:

Decide what size you want your finished pouch to be. We want ours to be 4” x 4” finished, so we need a piece of leather that is 4”x8”.
In Design Space, grab a square and size it to the width and height of your pouch. This helps you visualize how big you want the square of leather that we are engraving to be. Using another square, size it to represent the piece of leather you will engrave your name (or other text) on.
Open a text box and type in the word you want to use for your project and change it to the desired font. Add this to the smallest square and size it accordingly. Select the square and the word and choose Align, Center.
Select both layers: the smallest square and the words together and then go up to the top where it says “line type”. There is a drop-down below it and you have to choose “engrave” By doing that, it changes the cut lines to engrave lines. Select both layers and go down to the bottom right and press “attach”.
NOTE: We are hand cutting the largest piece. You can have the machine cut it for you and you can even add the holes if you want. We’re using a leather punch because the holes we want are quite small and it would take a really long time for the machine to cut them.
If you want the machine to do holes where you will be sewing, you can do that with a simple hack. In design space, open a text box and type in a period several times. Then go up to the top where it says rotate and you can rotate it 90 degrees. Pull it over to the side of the 1st square where you will be sewing it. Increase/decrease the spacing as needed by going to the top again where it says letter spacing. Now select both layers and go down to the bottom right and press slice. On the panels layer, you can delete the layers you don’t need).
Go ahead and click “make it’. We have hidden the layer we’re cutting by hand. The only one we are working with here is the smallest square where the engraving will be.
Select the material under “Tooling Leather” and choose “leather 2-5 oz”. Place the engraving tool into your machine as prompted. Place your leather on your mat and load the mat into the machine. When the machine stops, do not remove your mat from the machine. Design Space will prompt you to change to the knife blade. Remove the engraving tool and replace it with the knife blade. Press the flashing Cricut button.
White waiting, you could cut out the leather you’ll be using for the pouch with a rotary cutter. Once the machine cutting is done, you can unload the mat from the machine and cut the excess of the material away using the TruControl knife. Then, peel the mat away from it. You can then trim the back of the material using scissors to get rid of any fibers or frayed edges.
Now what you need to do is fold the large leather piece in half. Place your engraved design onto the folded leather as desired. You can just sew this on, but we prefer to punch holes with a leather punch. Punch through both layers at once so you get your placement just as you want
Get the thread and sewing needle and start sewing the engraved patch onto the pouch. You can use whatever color of the thread you like and sew it the way you want.
You can punch your holes on both sides of the pouch as well. It’s best to do this while folded so you line them up properly. With the pouch folded in half, sew the sides of it together.
Note: If you want to make this with your Explore Air 2, you would need to use the faux leather from Cricut because it’s so much thinner. An Explore can’t do engraving, so instead you could use HTV to add the name or you could use the Foil Quill.
