HOW TO USE CRICUT KNIFE BLADE | DIY MARQUEE LETTERS

What You’ll Need:
- Cricut Maker
- Strong Grip Mat
- Cricut Heavy Chipboard
- Cricut True Control Knife
- Hot Glue Gun
- White and Gray Acrylic Paint
- Polyurethane Spray
- Marquee Lights
- Canvas
- Foam Brushes
- Masking Tape
Steps:
Preparations to make ahead of time:

Grab your Cricut Heavy Chipboard and take it out of the plastic and let it sit out for 24 hours if possible. This helps prevent any warping or bending of the material.
Working in Cricut Design Space

Now let’s go to Cricut Design Space. For this project, we already created a really fun Marquee font. All we did was use a free font from Cricut and write out our word. Then, we were able to add in our circles. Be sure to measure what size your marquee lights are.

Press “Make It”. Make sure the letters fit well on your cutting mat. Press “Continue”.

Now we will connect it with our Cricut Maker and select our material. Click on “Browse All Materials” and select “Heavy Chipboard”.

Installing your knife blade and cutting your material

Once done, we will open clamp B and install our Knife Blade.

Make sure that all four stars are pushed all the way to the right side of your Cricut.

Grab your Strong Grip Mat and a piece of your Heavy Chipboard and place it down on your mat.

Put pieces of masking tape around the edges to help the chipboard stay adhered well to the mat.

When done, load it onto your machine. Since we’re using the knife blade, it’s really important to have our Cricut Design Space in its own browser because it’s going to take multiple passes to cut through. We want to make sure that your computer or tablet is not going to go into sleep mode. Once you’re ready to go, press the flashing Cricut button to start cutting.

Once the letters are cut, it’s time to paint.
The next thing will do is to paint it. Before we do that, we need to seal it with our polyurethane. So what we’re going to do is to give this one to two light coats. Allow that to dry completely.

Paint the letters white.

While the white painted letters are drying, we’ll paint our canvas gray.

Once both the canvas and chipboard letters are dry, use the glue gun to secure each letter.

Now that the letters are securely glued down, use the Cricut True Control Knife to poke holes into the canvas.

When you’re done, flip the canvas over to the back and secure the battery packs with Velcro.

Then pop the lights into the canvas and the letters.

Once the lights are in place, add in the lightbulbs.

And we’re done! Now you have a super cool marquee letter canvas that you can display in your home. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial as much as we did and that you’ve learned something new today. Happy Crafting!
