Cutting Felt with Cricut: A Beginners Guide

July 28, 2021 by Paula W

We love how versatile our Cricut machines are! Many people just think of them as vinyl cutting machines, but there is so much more you can do with them. One of our favorite uses for them is felt. Cutting felt with Cricut is not complicated but there are a few things you need to know about it.

There are many materials that aren’t vinyl that you can cut with your Cricut and one of our favorites is felt. We have gathered up some amazing Cricut hacks for working with felt and put them here in one simple beginner’s guide.

Beginners Guide To Cutting Felt With Cricut 1

Basic Tips When Working with Felt:

Mat placement:

When placing your felt on the cutting mat, be sure it’s lined up with where your design will be cut out. Many felt sheets come in odd sizes like 9 x 12″. Since you’re working with a 12 x 12″ mat, you just need to be aware of where your design has been placed and orient your felt accordingly.

Felt On Cutting Mat

Choosing designs to cut with felt

When choosing a design, you don’t want to choose anything too intricate. Sections that are really skinny can sometimes essentially disintegrate as you try to pull the felt off the mat. Try doing a test run before cutting out an entire project if you’re concerned about how small, intricate, or skinny the design is.

Cleaning your mats:

If you have cut felt with your Cricut machine before, you know how messy the mat can get with all the bits and fibers left behind. Be sure to check out our Three Ways to Clean Your Mats tutorial to deal with your dirty cutting mats.

Continue Until The Mat Is Completely Clean

Another tip we have for you to help prevent the mess in the first place is to lay some clear Contact paper sticky side up on your cutting mat. Put the felt on top of it and trim around the Contact paper so that just the back of your felt is covered with it. This helps prevent any fibers and debris from collecting on your mat in the first place.

How do I cut felt with my Cricut Explore Air 2 or Explore 3?

First of all, it’s important to note that you can’t just cut any kind of felt with an Explore. You need to use a really thin felt and in particular, we recommend using Cricut felt. Many people also use the really thin craft felt from a dollar or craft store, and this can work too, as long as it’s bonded (see below). You may want to use the Bonded Fabric blade for this.

This felt is not only thin but it’s stiff, almost paper-like. The wool felt we like to use with our Maker is thicker and more fabric-like and it won’t work with your Explore machine.

Use your FabricGrip or StrongGrip cutting mat and your Fine Point blade for the Cricut felt.

Pro tip: Felt fibers may gather in your blade. Take a soft lint-free cloth and wipe the blade off after use. You may also want to do this partway through a large felt project.

In the demonstration below (see video), the FabricGrip mat worked really well for the larger shapes like the triangle and the accent shape, but the felt would not stay down on the mat when cutting the name. So, we switched to a StrongGrip mat.

Choose Bonded Felt

When selecting your materials, you’ll see a couple of options for Felt. With this kind of felt and the Explore, we choose Bonded Felt. We are going to be bonding the felt to freezer paper.

Using Freezer Paper To Bond The Felt

To do this, place the freezer paper shiny side down onto your piece of felt. Use your EasyPress to iron it on. We had ours set at 340 and it worked well.

Bond The Freezer Paper To The Felt With The Easypress

Place the felt on your cutting mat, freezer paper side down and go ahead and load your mat into your machine. Cut out your felt shapes.

Peel Up From The Freezer Paper

Gently remove your cut felt pieces from the mat. You can easily peel the felt away from the freezer paper as well.

Felt flag with name on it made with Cricut machine

How do I cut felt with my Cricut Maker?

It’s so simple to cut felt with your Maker. We use our Rotary Blade and FabricGrip mat. When selecting your material, select Wool Felt. Because you’re using your Cricut Maker, you do not need to bond your felt with freezer paper.

Help! My rotary blade didn’t cut through the felt all the way.

If you’ve been using your rotary blade for a while, this may happen from time to time. Before unloading your mat from the machine, carefully lift up the felt a little bit to check and see how well it has been cut.

If it hasn’t cut all the way through, simply press the Cricut button again and let it recut. Remember, it’s very important that you leave the mat in the machine or this won’t work!

Common Questions:

Do you have any tips for gluing felt?

We like to use the Lynn Lilly hot glue gun because it has a precision tip. Too much glue can seep through felt so this helps us add a fine line where needed.

Gluing Felt Letters On Pennant

When working with something that is harder to line up, we like to place it and then holding part of it down, we lift up the other part and apply glue to one section at a time.

My felt isn’t sticking very well to my mat.

A brayer can be really helpful in getting it well adhered and laying evenly on the cutting mat.

Some of the pieces of my design are really stuck to the mat and won’t come up well.

Try using a spatula tool to lift the felt from the cutting mat without stretching or damaging it.

Can you place heat transfer vinyl on felt?

Use Easypress Mini Set At 300 Degrees

Yes! HTV goes onto felt so quickly and easily! We use our EasyPress Mini and set it to 300 degrees (the second setting). Apply it just as you would with any other vinyl project.

Adding 2nd Layer Of Heat Transfer Vinyl To Felt

We like to start with the EasyPress in the middle of the vinyl and then push out to the edges. Repeat several times and then you can move the Mini EasyPress around in circles to ensure that all areas are heated.

Sewn Felt Thumbs Up

In the video below, we will show you how we place two layers of iron-on vinyl on felt.

USE A SHOWER LINER TO PROTECT YOUR CUTTING MATS.

Shower Liner From Dollar Tree Being Used To Protect Cutting Mats
Protective Cover Sheet On Cutting Mat

We always advise that you save the protective sheet that comes on your cutting mats. It’s a great way to keep them clean and protect them from damage. Sometimes those get lost or damaged themselves. So, instead, grab a shower curtain liner from the dollar store. Cut it down to size and it makes a great replacement protective cover sheet for your cutting mat.

USE CONTACT PAPER WHEN CUTTING FELT WITH YOUR MACHINE.

Contact Paper From The Dollar Store

We usually use the clear contact paper, but any kind will work. Simply put contact paper on the back of your felt and then apply it to your cutting mat.

This way, it’s the contact paper that is in direct contact with your cutting mat and it won’t leave behind all those bits of felt that need to be cleaned up.

FIND ORGANIZERS AT THE DOLLAR STORE TO ORGANIZE YOUR DIE CUTTING TOOLS

Organizing Die Cutting Tools With Dollar Store Organizers

The dollar store is a great resource when it comes to finding organizing bins and caddies. This can help you get your die cutting tools organized and easy to find whenever you want to create a new project.

Grab some hardware organizing cases to keep your embellishments and other small items like blades sorted out. Pencil cases work well for keeping scissors contained.

FIND PENS AND MARKERS TO USE IN YOUR DIE CUTTING MACHINE.

Dollar Tree Pens And Markers That Work Well In The Cricut

Believe it or not, we have had great luck with using some pens and markers from Dollar Tree in our machines! It’s worth testing some out to see if you can get good results from them because they are so much cheaper than Cricut pens.

Tip: If you find the pen isn’t fitting snugly into the clamp, use a rubber band around the pen to make it a bit thicker.

ORGANIZE VINYL SCRAPS IN BINDERS AND ACCORDION FILES.

Binder And Accordion File For Organizing Vinyl Scraps

Get some of those clear plastic sleeves to organize larger vinyl scraps in a binder or you can use an accordion file for the smaller ones. This is such a great way to organize them and make it easier to find them later!

EVERY DIE CUTTING CRAFT ROOM NEEDS A LINT ROLLER

Lint Rollers From The Dollar Store

These are great for removing debris from your cutting mat safely. They’re also essential if you love to use Cricut Infusible Ink to ensure that your surface material is completely clean and clear of all lint and threads that could interfere with a clear infusion.

Place the glitter in the strainer and gently pat the side of it to distribute the glitter more evenly over your craft project.

Use Clear Top Coat Nail Polish To Seal Craft Projects

When in a pinch, you can use this clear nail polish to seal a craft project. Obviously, this will only work on smaller items and it’s more efficient and economical to use a regular sealant for most projects, but this is great for last minute needs.

What You Need to Know Before Cutting with Your Silhouette

September 18, 2020 by Paula W

Are you ready to get crafting with your Silhouette machine? It’s easy to use and so versatile. There are a few tips and tricks to cutting with it though, so we’re going to tell you what you need to know before cutting with your Silhouette.

What You Need To Know Before Cutting With Your Silhouette

What You Need to Know Before Cutting with Your Silhouette

Silhouette die cutting machine with tools

What Materials Can You Use?

There is a variety of materials you can cut with your Silhouette. However, some of the ones that are used in Silhouette projects you may find on some blogs out there aren’t necessarily Silhouette approved.

cutting with your silhouette

According to the official Silhouette America website, the following materials can be cut on your Silhouette Cameo:  vinyl, paper, specialty patterned papers, cardstock, vellum, iron-on heat transfer material, fabric (when using our Interfacing products), sticker paper, select fabrics (depending on their thickness of course) with fabric stabilizer, select felt products, wax paper, freezer paper, and fun foam. Using any other media is at your own risk and may damage your blade or machine.

Make a Test Cut.

Just because you cut the same material with the same blade and same cut settings before and it turned out perfectly doesn’t mean it will again this time. A test cut is always a great idea and is especially important when working with a material that’s new to you.

What should you look for after making a test cut? Your Silhouette Cameo will have cut a triangle inside of a square as your test cut. To see how well it cut, you need to weed it just as you would with any project.

weeding vinyl from Silhouette die cutting machine

Your goal in making a test cut is to find the lowest settings possible that you can successfully cut your project with.

Begin by weeding the triangle. The material should separate easily. If it doesn’t, and rips instead, your cut settings were too low.

Increase the blade force until you can weed the triangle perfectly. If you reach the maximum force setting and you still aren’t getting a precise cut, you need to increase the blade number.

putting blade in silhouette

The higher the blade number, the more of the blade is exposed and able to cut. All of your lines should be complete and all of your corners should be fully connected to the lines.

When cutting a material like HTV (which has a carrier sheet), you shouldn’t be able to feel the cut marks through the carrier though. If you can, or if you cut right through the carrier, you need to reduce your blade force and/or blade number.

Loading Your Vinyl

If you’re working with regular vinyl, load it right side up on the cutting mat.

loading cutting mat into silhouette machine

With heat transfer vinyl, you want it to be glossy side down and matte side up. Because of this, it’s important that you remember to mirror your image and text in your designs before cutting with HTV.

Line Up Your Cutting Mat

It’s really important to make sure that your cutting mat is lined up properly. The edge of the cutting mat should be lined up with the guide line over on the left side. Be sure to feed it into the machine straight.

lining up your cutting mat when loading silhouette

We’ve seen some people line up heavy containers or other items on either side of the mat if they’re really having trouble getting it in there perfectly straight.

With these simple cutting tips, you’ll be all set to create all kinds of amazing craft projects with your Silhouette.
