  7. Burnish, weed excess vinyl and apply clear transfer tape to vinyl.
  8. Remove mat from vinyl and burnish once again before removing the vinyl with transfer sheet from the vinyl backing.
  9. Position vinyl onto prepped (cleaned with alcohol and lint free cloth) tumbler. Smooth vinyl onto tumbler.
  10. Once vinyl has adhered to tumbler, remove transfer tape.
  11. Test out SUPER COOL vinyl by adding cold liquid to your tumbler.

DIY Stenciled Stovetop Cover

March 14, 2022 by Paula W

We simply adore this DIY stenciled stovetop cover that we made with the help of our Cricut machines and some vinyl for stenciling! Sometimes known as noodle boards, these handmade stove top covers are really useful too. They give you some much-needed extra kitchen counter space and if properly sealed with a food-grade sealant, they can be used as a stove top cutting board or kneading board for dough too.

It’s easy to make one of these stove toppers, even if you don’t have any previous woodworking experience. We’ll also share our best Cricut hacks for stenciling and getting professional looking results. These wooden stove covers make great gifts too!

Stove Top Cover Stenciled With Cricut 1 1

DIY Stenciled Stovetop Cover

If you’re planning to use your stove top cover as a cutting board, remember that the knife marks may affect your design. You might want to think about the placement of your stenciling to bear that in mind.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1 – 19×30 piece of ½ inch plywood
  • 1×4 cut into 2 19 inch pieces
  • Grey Chalk Paint: https://amzn.to/3Gh9NtN
  • White Chalk Paint: https://amzn.to/3rffkg5

Cut Files/Fonts Used:

  • Grid File: https://makersgonnalearn.com/fonts/family-name-grid-3/
  • Font File: https://makersgonnalearn.com/fonts/vintage-jeans/

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Stenciled Wooden Stove Top Cover

Making the wooden board:

1 – We bought a piece of wood and had Home Depot cut it down to size for us. Measure your stove to see just how large to make yours. If you have power tools available, you can also cut it to size yourself. Our board is 19 x 30 inches.

Two Boards Placed On Either Side Of The Larger Board

2 – You also need to cut down the 1 x 4s to fit the main board so that you can place them on either side.

Sand The Edges Of The Wood

3 – Sand the edges of all the pieces of wood until smooth. Use a circular motion to sand the surface of the pieces.

Paint The Wood

4 – Paint all of the wood pieces. We used chalk paint because we like the look and it dries really fast. One consideration when it comes to deciding whether to use paint or stain is that we are using two different kinds of wood. If we tried staining them, each kind would take the stain differently. By using paint, we are getting a cohesive finish on all of them.

PRO TIP: For a more finished look, be sure to paint the bottom of the board too!

Get Unlimited Access

Creating the design in Cricut Design Space:

Use The Grids Category Under Fonts

5 – While the paint is drying, you can work on your design for the stencil. To make this really easy, we have a Grids category in our fonts section. These grids do most of the designing for you!

Family Name Grid For Cut File Designs

6 – You can see that in this grid, all we have to do is plug in the name and established date right where those red rectangles are. You can choose whatever font you want, but you’ll see that there are suggested fonts available if you’re not sure what to pick.

Suggested Fonts To Use With The Grid Are Available

7 – Upload your grid into Design Space. Add your text and drag it into the rectangle. Size as needed. Repeat for the second rectangle.

Upload The Cut File Into Design Space
Type In Your Text And Place It In The Boxes
Size The Font To Fit Appropriately

8 – Select everything and use Align, Center Horizontally to get everything lined up.

Use Align Center Horizontally To Get Everything Lined Up

9 – Once you have everything where you want it, click off the whole design and select only the Family Name Grid over in your layers panel and delete to get rid of the red boxes.

Delete The Grid Boxes

10 – You can finetune the placement of everything until you like how it looks. To keep it all together, select the whole design and Weld. Doublecheck the size of your design – we wanted ours to fit on one cutting mat.

Cutting the stencil:

11 – Now you can click Make It to cut out your design. Choose your materials and follow the prompts to get your stencil cut out.

Move The Design Into The Middle Of The Mat

PRO TIP: Move the design into the middle of the mat to give some extra space around it. This is really helpful when you’re using a vinyl design as a stencil.

Adding the handles:

Use A Drill Or Screwdriver To Add The Handles To The Wood 1

12 – Next, we’re going to add the handles to the side pieces of wood. Use a measuring tape to ensure that they are centered. Screw them in place with a screwdriver or drill.

Glue The Side Pieces To The Backing 1

13 – Glue the sides pieces to the main backing piece of wood using a good wood glue. We’re using Gorilla Glue. If you have clamps, use them to secure the wood in place while the glue dries. If not, find some heavy books, buckets, or other items you have lying around! We have a brad nailer so we nailed ours in place.

Applying the stencil:

Peel The Backing Off The Stencil 1

14 – Mark your measurements so that you can center your stencil perfectly on the board. Peel the backing off the stencil slowly and carefully.

Line Up Your Stencil In Place

15 – Line up the stencil in place. Remember you only have one chance to place this down so work slowly. We find the taco method makes it easier. Gently bend the design in the center to make a taco shell-like shape. Lay the middle of the design down first and then move your hands out to lay down the sides. This helps not only ensure it’s centered, but also helps prevent air bubbles.

Use A Burnishing Tool To Ensure There Are No Air Bubbles 1

16 – Use a burnishing tool to make sure the design is flat and well-adhered with no bubbles or wrinkles. Remove the transfer tape. Peel it up slowly and carefully so you don’t pull up any of the middles of the letters.

Stenciling:

Paint Over The Stencil With The Same Color As The Background 1

17 – Paint over the stencil using the same color as the background! YES! This is an important stenciling hack and helps you get amazing results. Paint on an even light coat and this will help seal the edges of the stencil and give you nice, crisp results.

Paint Over The Stencil With White Paint 1

18 – After this is dry, paint over the stencil with the desired color. In this case, we used white. You might need more than one coat.

Work Carefully Especially Around The Edges Of The Stencil 1

19 – Work carefully around the edges. If you get some white paint onto the gray board, just cover it with some gray paint.

Peel Off The Stencil 1

20 – Once you have painted all the coats of paint needed for the stencil and it has dried, peel off the stencil.

PRO TIP: Remove the larger parts of the stencil first. Then, it’s easier to go back in and remove the smaller pieces.

Finishing touches:

21 – Flip the board upside down. Apply little felt pads to help protect the top of your stove.

Sand The Wood To Create A Distressed Look 1

22 – Run your sanding block along the edges and over parts of the board to create a distressed look.

Wooden Stove Top Cover Diy

And that’s it! Your decorative wooden stove top cover is ready to use. If you want to do food prep right on the board, be sure to add a food-grade sealant over your paint and design.

How to Sublimate on Wood

September 21, 2021 by Paula W

Have you jumped on the sublimation bandwagon yet? We are just loving this trend! We’ve been doing sublimation for a few years but now that it has become the big trend of the moment, we are trying it out even more. Today, we’re going to show you how to sublimate on wood.

You won’t believe how easy this is! The wood takes the ink really well and you get fantastic results. Follow along with our craft tutorial and get ready to make your own wooden sublimation projects.

How To Sublimate On Wood 1

How to Sublimate on Wood

Cut Files and Fonts Used:

Hello Fall

Plaid Pattern

Mandala Pumpkin

Supplies needed:

  • Cricut Maker
  • Knife Blade
  • Cricut Basswood
  • StrongGrip Cutting Mat
  • Sublimation Printer with Sublimation Ink in it
  • Sublimation Paper
  • Reverse Tweezers
  • DecoArt Paint – Burnt Sienna
  • Paintbrush
  • Cricut EasyPress
  • Glue – We used Gorilla Wood Glue.

What if I Don’t Have a Cricut Maker?

We’re using a Cricut Maker for this project because we are cutting Basswood. This requires the Knife Blade. If you want to make a similar project with a Cricut Explore, you would need to use one of the Cricut Wood Veneer products and the Deep Cut Blade.

How To Sublimate On Wood

Is This a Good Project to Sell?

It’s important to set expectations when working with materials like wood and your Cricut. The cost of the Basswood is a bit high for the amount you get. To make a project here and there, this isn’t necessarily an issue, but this wouldn’t be very practical for a craft project that you want to sell it.

In addition, remember that the Knife Blade does take quite some time to cut, meaning that your Cricut machine will be busy for longer than most vinyl projects, for example. This is time you could use for making other projects. Finally, we find that the Knife Blade isn’t as accurate in its cuts as other blades such as the Fine Point Blade. Bear this in mind and give yourself some extra time to make projects out of wood.

Pro tip: You must use a laptop or desktop computer and connect to your Cricut machine with the USB cord when working with the Knife Blade.

Place Basswood On Stronggrip Cutting Mat

Preparing and Cutting the Wood

Place the wood on your mat. Use a brayer to help it adhere to the mat really well.

Tape down around the edges with masking tape. This is really important. Wood is a material that is prone to moving around, even on the StrongGrip mat, and this just adds a little extra security.

Tape Down Wood On Cutting Mat

Pro tip: We like to place our design so that it doesn’t cut right at the edge where the tape is. We have never had an issue with it – it cuts right through the tape just fine – but just to ensure that there are no problems, we move our design over a bit.

We decided to start cutting the wooden part of the design first since it takes quite a while. Then, we can go back and work on the rest of the design while it’s cutting.

Cut Wood With Cricut Maker

Click Make It and select the mat for your wooden design. Connect to your Cricut machine and click Continue. Select your materials and start cutting.

Pro tip: If you want to start cutting the wood, but then go back to Design Space to work on the rest of your project, you can click on File, New Window. You can work in that new window while the other window has your design for the wood cutting.

Cut Files Being Used For Sublimation On Wood

Working in Design Space

When working on sublimation craft projects, there are times when we prefer to use Illustrator. Since you’ll be creating a Print then Cut design with sublimation, you are restricted to certain sizes in Design Space. Today, we’re working within those restrictions, we can stick with Cricut Design Space, but it’s something to bear in mind.

We are using several different files for this project. For the pumpkin shape, we manipulated the pumpkin mandala cut file. Since we’re using only the top layer of this file, you can delete the rest of it.

Place Pumpkin Shape On Top Of Square

Grab a square from the Basic Shapes menu. Place the pumpkin outline on it and Send to Front.

Use Slice To Cut Out The Pumpkin

Select both the pumpkin and the square. Choose Slice at the bottom of the Layers Panel. Delete the layers that you don’t need.

Sliced Pumpkin Shape

We used the same technique to slice away the curli-cues at the top of the pumpkin leaves. You can keep them if you prefer. We used a square on each one, turning and angling it as needed.

Add A Square On Each Pumpkin Leaf Tendril

Weld the two squares together (to make them one layer). Select that layer as well as the pumpkin layer and choose Slice.

Slice Results

Delete the unnecessary slice results.

Use Contour To Remove The Remaining Unneeded Parts

Select the remaining cut file and choose Contour. Now, you can contour away the last bits of the pumpkin’s tendrils. Size the pumpkin as desired and size the Hello Fall cut file to fit on the pumpkin.

Manipulate The Plaid Pattern

Next, you can manipulate the plaid pattern. You can pull in a color palette if you’d like and change the colors. You can even delete parts of the pattern if you find it too busy.

Use Color Sync In The Layers Panel

Use Color Sync next to the Layers Panel to drag and drop and change the colors in the pattern as you’d like. Select all the layers in the pladi pattern and choose Flatten. Your plaid pattern will change from multiple layers to one.

Size The Plaid Pattern To Fit The Pumpkin

Size the plaid pattern to fit the pumpkin.

Cutting and Printing Your Project

Press Make It to send your project to the cutting mats and cut them out. The words and the pumpkin will be cut from wood. The plaid pattern is a Print then Cut design so it will be printed on your sublimation printer. We don’t need to cut it out so we’ll be skipping that step.

Pro tip: With sublimation, if it’s words or an image where direction matters, you would need to mirror your image.

With Print Then Cut We Like To Use System Dialog
Using System Dialog To Increase Print Quality

Since we have plenty of space in the plaid pattern around the pumpkin, we don’t need to turn Bleed on, but with Print then Cut projects, we always like to turn on the System Dialog so we can go in and increase the print quality.

Assembling Your Craft Project

Paint the letters in whatever color you’d like. We used DecoArt Burnt Sienna.

Sublimation On Wood Craft Project

Place the printed plaid pattern wrong side up on the wooden pumpkin. Place the Cricut EasyPress on it to heat. We use a setting of 400 degrees for 50 seconds.

Use Cricut Easypress To Heat Sublimation Design

Pro tip: We placed a piece of poster board under our project to ensure that if any of the ink went beyond the edges of the pumpkin, it wouldn’t stain our work surface.

Wooden Pumpkin With Plaid Sublimation Design On It

We used the reverse tweezers to place the letters on the pumpkin. It really helps us to position them perfectly!

Easy Wood Burning with Cricut

July 14, 2021 by Paula W

We are so excited about this Cricut hack that we’re going to teach you today. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to do Easy Wood Burning with Cricut.

Cricut wood projects are some of our favorite crafts to make. For this project, we are making a wooden tray with a really pretty tropical leaf pattern on it. It’s so simple to make! Place your chosen design on a basic piece of wood, do our easy chemical wood burning technique, add a couple of handles, and voila! You’ve got an amazing trendy tray.

Easy Woodburning With Cricut 1

Easy Woodburning with Cricut

Not only are we going to show you how to do use this faux woodburning method, but today, we’re going to do matless cutting with regular adhesive vinyl. That’s right! We are not using Cricut Smart Materials today. This is going to be an exciting experiment!

We love testing out Cricut tips and sharing them with you. You’re going to love this one!

Materials we are using:

  • Cricut Maker 3: https://amzn.to/357R2c9 or Cricut Explore 3: https://amzn.to/3pHRuap
  • Cricut Smart Permanent Vinyl For Maker/Explore 3: https://amzn.to/3v9klWl

  • Sanding Blocks: https://amzn.to/35476Le

SVG we’re using: Makers Gonna Learn Tropical Leaf Cut File

Cricut Woodburning Tutorial

Resize Your Design To Fit The Wooden Surface For The Tray

Working in Design Space

1 – Let’s begin by downloading the tropical leaf cut file from Makers Gonna Learn and uploading it into Cricut Design Space.

2 – Unlock the design by clicking on the lock symbol. Size the pattern to what you need for your tray. In this case, we’re making it 11 1/2 by 8 inches. This is all the work that needs to be done on this design in Design Space!

Cut Vinyl To 13 Inches To Be Able To Use It For Matless Cutting

How to do matless cutting with regular vinyl

3 – Because we want to do matless cutting with our regular Starcraft vinyl instead of Smart Materials, we need to cut it to size. For matless cutting to work, the material needs to be 13 inches wide. We’re using a roll of vinyl that is 12 inches wide, so we’re using our paper trimmer to cut off a piece that is 12 by 13 inches.

Rough Edges From Matless Cutting With Regular Vinyl

As you can see, with this matless cutting using regular vinyl, the edges came out a bit rough. Bear that in mind when it comes to the placement of your design. You don’t want it too close to the edges.

Click Make It And Choose Without Mat
Design Ready For Cutting

Cutting and weeding your stencil

4 – Click Make It and choose “Without Mat”. Press Continue. Allow your machine to connect. Load materials into machine. We’re using the Cricut Maker 3. Press the Start button when prompted.

Load Materials Into Machine 1

5 – Once your design has been cut out, weed it. We found that even without burnishing, it weeded like a dream. If you are working with a mat, we do generally recommend burnishing for easier and more foolproof weeding.

Weeding Design For Wood Burning

Reminder: you need to weed away the opposite of what you normally would. We’re making a stencil so in this case, we’re weeding away the positive space (the design itself) and keeping the negative space (the area around the design).

Using The Taco Method Apply Transfer Tape To Your Design

6 – Using the taco method, apply a piece of transfer tape to your design. The taco method is a great vinyl hack! It means to gently fold (don’t crease) the transfer tape in half as seen in the photo above. Apply the middle to your design first and then, move your hands to allow each side to lay down onto the design. This is a helpful technique that helps to reduce any air bubbles or creases from forming.

Burnish Transfer Tape Onto Design

7 – Burnish down the transfer tape to your design. Flip it over and burnish from the back as well.

Place Design On Wood And Burnish

8 – Using the taco method again, place your design down onto the piece of wood. Burnish well. Peel up the transfer tape.

Use Scorchmarker Pro To Create Woodburned Design

Using the chemical wood burning technique

9 – Color in your stencil using the Scorchmarker Pro marker. Peel up the vinyl stencil.

Use Heat Tool To Scorch Your Design
Completed Woodburning Design

10 – Use your heat embossing tool to scorch your design. Keep the heat moving over your design.

Ed6fqeca

Once complete attach the handles using the provided screws.

There are a lot of variations you can make on this idea. Instead of a tray, how about a cutting board or charcuterie board? You could stain the board or leave it natural as we did. Seal your project if you wish.
