Items we tested from Five Below:

Five Below Sublimation Blanks

Let’s go over each of these items one by one.

Slippers From Five Below

House slippers:

As you can see one of these slippers looks better than the other. We found that to get the best results, we needed to increase the amount of heat we were using. With 400 degrees (the 3rd setting on the EasyPress Mini), our slippers turned out great! Because they’re such a bulky shape, we do suggest using the EasyPress Mini if possible.

Socks From Five Below

Socks:

These work beautifully for sublimation! We get great results time after time.

Laptop Case From Five Below

Laptop Case:

Use a heat press for this (not your EasyPress Mini) to avoid any movement and shadowing. You’ll get great results on these laptop sleeves.

Yoga Towel From Five Below

Yoga Towel:

Sublimation works on these towels flawlessly! You’re going to love the results you get.

Notebooks From Five Below

Notebooks:

You might not think of notebooks as something to use as a sublimation blank, but these are easy to work with and great to use as gifts or items to sell. Customize them with your own designs to make something special.

Blanket From Five Below

Blankets:

There is a wide variety of blanket styles available at Five Below. They work beautifully as sublimation blanks. We have found that often, the more texture the blanket has, the better the results we get.

Shirt From Five Below

Shirts:

You can find lots of 100% polyester shirts at Five Below that you can use for sublimation. Many of their shirts have great quality and we like the texture of them as they feel much more expensive!

Neck Pillows From Five Below

Neck Pillow:

These travel pillows are a great blank to use for sublimation.

Hat From Five Below

Hats:

As you can see, this hat was an epic fail. The sublimation looks great, but the hat actually melted!

Head Bands From Five Below

Headbands:

Customizing these headbands was a breeze with sublimation! The one thing you need to consider is that the design will stretch out as the headband is placed on your head.

Throw Pillow From Five Below

Throw Pillows:

Look at the fantastic results we got with sublimating on these throw pillows! This gives you an inexpensive resource to add designs to for every holiday and season!

These are our favorite sublimation blanks from Five Below. We are ALL about saving money where we can in our crafting and we love passing along our money-saving tips to you. Happy crafting!

DIY Sublimation License Plate

September 23, 2022 by Paula W

This is such a fun idea for those of you who live in a state where only one license plate is required. Use the other license plate spot for something fun that reflects your personality like our monogrammed sublimation license plate! These make great gifts and products to sell too!

Infusible Ink Premium Vinyl On A Sublimation Blank License Plate

  • Mermaid Rainbow Infusible Ink
  • Outdoor Mod Podge
  • Paint Brush
  • Black Matte Vinyl
Sublimation License Plate

Step-by-step Instructions:

  1. Download the font from Makers Gonna Learn. Then, unzip the file and install it on your computer..
  2. In Design Space, grab a square from Basic Shapes over on the left and size it to the size of the license plate you are making. In this tutorial, it’s 12”x6”.
  3. Open a text box and type in the letter for your last name (or whatever name you’re using for this monogram). When you open your fonts, be sure to take note that with a monogram there will be multiple files. In this case, we have Scallop Monogram Right, Left, and Center as our 3 files. Since this is the first letter of your last name, choose Scallop Monogram Center.
  4. Next, open another text box and type in the first letter of your first name. Change that to Scallop Monogram Left.
  5. Finally, open one more text box and type in the first letter of your middle name. Change that to Scallop Monogram Right.
  6. We’re placing these side by side but we haven’t sized them yet because we want to show you a simple hack for that. Sizing them all at once makes it so much quicker and easier to get it perfect. Select all 3 of the letters and choose Align, Center Vertically. While they are still selected, choose Group.
  7. Now, all 3 parts of your monogram will move together as one and you can size them appropriately for your license plate. Remember to think about where the holes will be on the actual license plate when sizing your design.
  8. Delete the rectangle – it was just for visualization purposes. With your design selected, choose Attach or Weld to keep the pieces together and in order during the cutting process.
  9. Click Make It. Then, Continue and connect to your machine. Set your material – we’re using Premium Vinyl. Place the vinyl on the cutting mat and then load the mat into the machine.
  10. Once cutting is completed, unload the mat from the machine. Burnish your vinyl to the mat and weed away the excess vinyl. Remember to also weed away the centers of any letters as needed.
  11. Apply transfer tape to your design. Burnish again. Flip the mat upside down and carefully peel the mat away from your design. Burnish your design again from the back.
  12. Preheat the EasyPress to 385. Place the Infusible Ink sheet on the paper trimmer and line it up on the 6 inches mark and cut it.
  13. Put the Infusible Ink sheet facedown on the license plate and make sure to line it up perfectly. In order to secure it, so it won’t move around, you can use the heat-resistant tape to tape it to the license plate. Place the Teflon sheet over the Infusible Ink on the license plate.  It needs to heat up for 40 seconds with minimal pressure.
  14. Remove the Teflon sheet. Allow the license plate to cool down before peeling up the heat-resistant tape. Remember that this is metal so it will take a bit longer to cool.
  15. Remove the backing of the monogram. Place it where you’d like on the license plate. Burnish well. Peel up the transfer tape.
  16. The last thing you need to do is apply the mod podge to seal the license plate. Get a good amount on your paintbrush and apply it smoothly. Mod podge goes on white and dries clear. NOTE: It needs to be cured for 28 days before using it outside.

How to Sublimate on Cotton

August 22, 2022 by Paula W

If you have been working on sublimation projects for a while, you may think that you can only sublimate on polyester. Well. we’re here to tell you that you CAN sublimate on cotton! Wow! The DTF film and adhesive we’re demonstrating here is a game-changer.

Be sure to check out this post and video and learn how that’s possible. We will show you just how to make sublimation crafts on 100% cotton, opening up a whole new selection of materials to use with your projects. This is a must-see for sublimation fans.

How To Sublimate On Cotton 1

How to Sublimate on Cotton

DTF means direct to fabric and it is what makes all the difference in being able to sublimate on 100% cotton. Let’s get started and show you how easy it is to use.

Sublimating On Cotton

Materials needed:

  • 100% cotton t-shirt – https://amzn.to/3pk2fAh
  • DTF Transfer Adhesive Powder – https://amzn.to/3duy7PT
  • DTF Transfer Film – https://amzn.to/3JQDGVc
  • A piece of copy paper
  • A bin to put the adhesive in
  • Measuring tape
  • Masking tape
  • Sublimation Printer: https://amzn.to/3P4BOd3
  • Sublimation Ink: https://www.143vinyl.com/starcraft-su…
  • Heat press: https://www.143vinyl.com/starcraft-he…
  • Heat resistant gloves: https://amzn.to/3dR01mt
  • Cut file: https://makersgonnalearn.com/cut_file…
Sublimate On 100 Cotton

Step-by-step tutorial:

Create New Design In Canva 1

WORKING IN CANVA

1 – Download your desired Print then Cut cut file from Makers Gonna Learn. Open Canva and set the size of your design. Ours is 8.5 by 11 inches. Then click Create New Design.

Go To Uploads And Upload Your Png 1

2 – Upload your PNG file. If you drag and drop, it will automatically upload for you.

Size Your Design As Desired

3 – Size your design as desired. Remember that it needs to work within the confines of the transfer film.

Use Flip To Mirror Your Design

4 – You need to mirror your image. To do that in Canva, you can do it by clicking on Flip. You can then Flip Horizontally or Flip Vertically. For our purposes, we flipped horizontally.

Choose Transparent Background When You Download 1

5 – Click Share. Download. Choose Transparent Background. Click Download.

Select Best Quality

PRINTING YOUR DESIGN

6 – Open the image that was downloaded. Choose your sublimation printer. We find this product works best on the “Photo on Glossy Paper” setting. Change the quality of the print to “Best”.

Tape The Film To The Copy Paper

7 – Before you print, it’s important to prepare the film. We found it worked best to tape it to a sheet of copy paper and feed it through the printer that way. Make sure you are working with the film print side (matte side) up. Line it up with the copy paper underneath it as close to the top as possible, leaving a little bit of space for the tape. Try to get the masking tape as close to the top of the film as you can so it covers it as little as possible.

8 – Make sure you know how your particular printer feeds before loading the paper. Ours works with the side it’s going to print on face down. This is very important.

Pro Tip: If you don’t know how your printer works, use a plain piece of copy paper. Put an X on one side and feed it into your machine. Print it and find out which side it prints on.

Print your design.

Place The Printed Image In The Bin Of Adhesive
Move The Paper Around Until The Transfer Sheet Is Covered In Adhesive

ADDING THE ADHESIVE

9 – Put the adhesive (it’s a powder) into a bin that’s large enough to hold your printed design. Without touching your printed image, slide it into the bin. Carefully move the transfer around until it is completely coated with the adhesive. You want it well coated with the adhesive.

Pro Tip: Hold it up to the light so you can make sure that the design is thoroughly coated.

Place Design Under Heat Press To Cook It

10 – Place your design on your heat press. You want the heat set to 385 degrees. Lower the lid but don’t let it touch the design and adhesive. You want to heat it for 30 seconds to a minute and a half. Since we used a clamshell style heat press and the lid lowers at an angle, we turned our design around when it was partway “cooked” so that it would be heated more evenly.

Heated Design

HEATING YOUR DESIGN

11 – Once your design is heated, you will see that it no longer looks powdery. The adhesive has melted and you can see your design as with the image above. You are able to see the colors and details now.

Place The Design On The Shirt

12 – Press your shirt in the heat press for about 10-15 seconds to get all of the wrinkles out. Place the design on the shirt and cover with a piece of butcher paper. Press for 30-35 seconds. It’s a good idea to wear heat resistant gloves when you take the shirt from the heat press.

Pro tip: A warm peel did not give us good results. Cold peel was best. We like to rub the shirt against a cold surface (like a marble countertop) to help cool it down faster. Flip it over and rub it again on the other side.

Once Cool To The Touch Peel Off The Transfer Sheet
Sublimated Design On Cotton Shirt

13 – Once the design is cool to the touch, slowly begin peeling away the transfer sheet.

Isn’t this an amazing technique? Let us know if you give it a try.

Cricut Wood Crafts

May 31, 2022 by Paula W

Have you ever thought of making some crafts with wood and your Cricut machine? Cricut Wood Crafts are really popular, but often, people only think of making signs with wood and vinyl.

We’ve got a variety of different ways that you can use wood with your die cutting machine and we think you’re going to be really inspired by these. We are so excited to share our favorite wood projects along with some great Cricut hacks with you!

Wood Crafts With Cricut

Cricut Wood Crafts

Iron On Wood Home Decor

Iron on Wood

When we apply vinyl to wood, like when we’re making signs, we prefer to use heat transfer vinyl and iron it on. As long as you’re using smooth wood (sand if needed!), it applies and sticks beautifully. We find that signs made with iron-on vinyl last a really long time too!

Stovetop Cover Stenciled With Cricut

Stenciling

Another great way to add a design to wood using your Cricut machine is by stenciling. You can make a stencil out of freezer paper or vinyl and then add your design using paint.

Diy Clipboard Made With Cricut

Using the Knife Blade

If you’ve got a Cricut Maker, get out that knife blade and you can cut out some thicker materials to create some amazing projects. You can use the knife blade to make some chipboard coasters, a custom made jigsaw puzzle, your own clipboards, light up marquee letters, and so much more!

Wood Burned Tray

Do Wood Burning with your Cricut

You can create designs in Cricut Design Space and then use our chemical wood burning technique to get that wood-burned look on your signs, boxes, or other wooden projects.

How To Sublimate On Wood

Sublimate on Wood

That’s right. You can do sublimation on wood! It’s a really simple technique and gives such pretty results.

Do you make many wood projects with your Cricut machine? We love them and can’t wait to find some more techniques to share with you. Be sure to share your craft projects with us in our private Facebook group or on social media using the hashtag #MakersGonnaLearn.
