Sealing Permanent Vinyl

This first hack is genius and focuses on vinyl application, specifically sealing permanent vinyl. If you’ve ever wondered about sealing vinyl, listen up because this hack will bust some misconceptions. Jessica from Cricut and Crafts explains it perfectly. She mentions that she doesn’t seal her vinyl because it’s permanent vinyl, but she uses a heat gun to activate the adhesive. This extra step can make your vinyl last much longer.

To get the best results, always clean your surface with rubbing alcohol before applying vinyl. Use a paper towel with the alcohol to thoroughly clean the surface. Once the vinyl is applied, lightly use a heat gun or embossing gun over the design to activate the adhesive further. This helps the vinyl stick better and ensures it lasts longer, even on projects like tumblers or wood crafts. You’re securing the adhesive for a more durable finish by heating the adhesive slightly.

Placing the Cover Sheet Back on the Cutting Mat

The second hack comes from DIY Holic, and we’re testing it in two ways—her method and another one we use in the office. We’ll compare them and see which one works better. In her TikTok, she shows a method to line up Cricut mats and cover sheets quickly and easily. It looks super simple! However, first, I’ll show you how we’ve traditionally done it. To start, place your Cricut mat under your Cricut machine.

Place the cover sheet on top, aligning it with the holes or edges of the mat.

Pull out the mat and cover sheet while ensuring everything is lined up evenly.

Now, let’s try her way. She places the Cricut mat on top of the machine. Then, she lines up the cover sheet with the mat and presses the cover sheet into place. You may only need to adjust the sides; even if they’re slightly off, it doesn’t matter. I was impressed by how easy her method was—definitely one to try!

Cricut Weeding Tool Hidden Feature

The third hack is a simple but surprising discovery. Did you know your Cricut weeding tool has a hidden feature? You can open it up!

Inside, there’s a slot to clean off any vinyl or scraps stuck to the tool. Instead of peeling bits off with your fingers, you can tap the weeding tool into the slot, which collects the scraps.

Once it’s full, you can empty it out and close it back up. It’s such a convenient way to keep your workspace clean and tidy while weeding your projects.

Extend the Life of Your Mats When Using Felt

The next hack, shared by Corrine Blackstone, is perfect for extending the life of your Cricut mats when cutting felt. To avoid residue from felt sticking to your mat, you can use transfer tape as a barrier. Start by applying transfer tape, sticky side up, to your Cricut mat. Use the taco method—curve the tape into a U-shape and apply it from the center outwards to minimize bubbles.

Once the transfer tape is applied, place your felt on top of it. The felt will stick to the transfer tape instead of the mat, and any residue left behind will be on the transfer tape, not your mat. After cutting, simply peel off the transfer tape, and your mat will look as good as new. It’s a great way to preserve the stickiness of your Cricut mats.

Use Every Square Inch of Your Printable Vinyl

Another fantastic hack addresses using every square inch of printable vinyl. If you want to save materials, follow this method. First, upload your images into Cricut Design Space. Add a rectangle representing the full printable vinyl sheet and arrange your designs within the rectangle. This ensures you’re maximizing the use of your material.

Once everything is arranged, delete the rectangle, select all your designs, and attach and flatten them. Save your project, then print it. This hack ensures that no space is wasted, and you get the most out of your printable vinyl.

Keep Your Mat from Hanging Down

We will be honest. We’re not entirely sure why this is important. Personally, we’ve never found the mat hanging down to be an issue or to interfere with us getting a good cut. But, if you think it might be causing problems for you, perhaps on a particularly intricate cut, you might want to try this. Load your cutting mat into your Cricut machine as usual. Place a paper tube under the end of the mat. One particular way this tip might help is when cutting thicker material. Sometimes, that material can lift up from the mat as it hangs down, so this might be a helpful hack for that situation. Give it a try!

These hacks are easy to implement and can make your Cricut projects more enjoyable and efficient. Which one will you try first? Let me know your thoughts and if you have any hacks of your own to share!
